VR Gaming

First Hand

I played the demo ‘first hand’. The demo that comes with the Meta Quest 3.

I like how crisp and clear the world is. The concepts in the game are integrated quite well.

Graphics are not the complete solution to greater immersion. It is more about concepts. How they are written. Weaved together.

Better Graphics increases the amount pixels that can be rendered. Which allows for more activity in the world. However, without good design it will feel the opposite of being immersed in virtual reality. For example take pictures. We have higher resolutions. iPhones for the longest time didn’t have more than 12 mega pixels. A possible answer for this is software needed to be created. With greater detail, the responsibility for good photography goes up. Now software in phone tech will do the heavy lifting for us. So that it as easy as clicking a button and the photo is calibrated to look better by default. It is like digital painting software that can ease the jitter of a line and smooth it out.

I imagine AI helps with these problems. I use AI to help me study knowledge faster. The AI helps grow what I can already reach. I still need to read books, watch videos, study code and ponder concepts on my own. There is a great misunderstanding out there. AI does not take away our involvement. With no human, AI has no purpose. I call it Assistance Intelligence. AI is meant to assist us. It always will have that purpose, so we can have greater reach to create, write and dream smoothly. One person acting with strength of multiple individuals. There is less scaling horizontally and more potency required of the designer. Skilled hands are required to overcome trapped lines. We need to think for ourselves. Understand those concepts. Why things work before AI can ultimately be empowering to us. Without our intelligence growing, we can only receive generic results from the assistance of AI.

To stand out is to dive into the deep end. Then obtaining our own identity and thoughts will eventually arrive by virtue of being human. A human who engages with learning. A human who grows. A human who acts with agency. Integrity sealing it all together.

So back to graphics. Greater shaders, higher meshes, better visual effects are all great. Efficiency is wonderful as well. Yet they are just elements. For example, the ironsmith takes all the metal and forges it anew. Thinks for himself or her own mind. Feels out the metal as it heats. Empathy for each sound. Emotions gushing and melting like molten steel. Visualizes the step, touches the work and knows each moment.

Software is complex. It is a hyper form of writing filled with patterns. Those patterns altered in the weave of dynamic design. A feedback loop. Where creativity meets function, and they talk back to each other. Considering all the requirements like a poem. Fitting it all together and hearing the right moments is very much an art felt frame by frame.

Immersion for Virtual Reality is designed with each game. It is hyper realistic and requires greater control. These games all have different moments in time.

To capture space is to know space. Driving a car requires a mind like an engine. To hardcore off buildings is to believe in adventure. Our bodies must know these details intimately in order to capture the details.

VR is immersive after all. Completely and utterly in each frame. Our time sense shifts with the rhythm of the game. And thinking adapts to the 3D relationships of each application.

No more 2D. It is all spatial. A new dimension interacting with our soul. Our excited beings placed either in greater stress or greater abundance. All depends on the intent and design of the app.

Then the loop is finished by the user. What is their intent?
